I am a Costa Rican|Canadian artist, writer and educator. I hold a PhD in Art History, Theory and Criticism with an Art Practice Concentration and a Critical Gender Studies Specialization from the University of California San Diego. At UCSD, I was a Katzin Fellow and a Black Studies Project Awardee. My dissertation focused on the art and life of stage and television actor and painter, Felicia Montealegre Bernstein (1922-1978) exploring her artwork and her commitment to intercultural solidarity in advance of civil rights during the 1970s.
About my work:
I make art that integrates a wide array of media from painting and sculpture, printmaking and photography, to performance-driven installation. My projects grow out of deep material research, often evolving into new permutations over multiple years, and reflecting my ongoing thematic concern with processes of subject formation, building community and/or amplifying the social relevance of artistic research. Currently, for example, my art practice involves weaving textiles using a shadow painting (or ikat) technique and black and white medium-format photography. I also often collaborate with small-scale fabricators to explore material histories through different frameworks—in particular, the use of archaic, traditional technologies commonly associated with gendered labour. Through such collaborations, I have produced work in pochoir, silversmithing, plastic, neon, and metal manufacturing techniques for display in gallery and in public contexts. Following this model, my public artwork, Seven Signs was exhibited at the Waterfront in Seattle (2016). Other notable exhibitions of my work have taken place at Plug In Institute for Contemporary Art (Winnipeg), the National Gallery of Costa Rica (San José), Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver), and at artist run centres in Canada, including Artspeak, Access, Blinkers and 221A. My writing has appeared in BOMB, Canadian Art, Public Parking, Charcuterie, c magazine, PubLab and The Capilano Review. My play, The Mexican Husband was published by Blank Cheque Press (2019) and Taller California (2025). It was staged as a full theatrical production through Project [Blank] (2026) at Bread & Salt in San Diego (2026). The Mexican Husband was also staged as a reading-event at: Mandeville Gallery in San Diego (2024), at Vinegar Contemporary in Birmingham, Alabama (2022), at the 3rd Kamias Triannial in Manila (2020), at Artspeak in Vancouver (2019) and at Deslave in Tijuana (2018).
